SLOVAKIA ELECTED ITS FIRST EVER FEMALE PRESIDENT

The 45-year-old politician, lawyer, and activist, Zuzana Čaputová will be the first woman and the youngest ever elected president in the history of Slovakia after she won Slovakia's presidential election on Saturday.


Pro-EU Caputova's campaign was focused on change and fighting the corruption under the slogan" Stand up to evil". Čaputová says that "justice in Slovakia does not always apply equally to everyone". During the campaign, she announced plans to introduce changes to Slovakia's police and judicial system.


Her victory in the first round of the election on 16 March 2019, with 40.57% of the vote versus her opponent Maros Sefcovic with only with 18.7%, was crowned with the full victory in the second round on 30 March 2019, with about 58.3% versus Maros Sefcovic who took 41.7%.


After the victory, she addressed a crowd of her supporters with the words: “I am happy not just for the result but mainly that it is possible not to succumb to populism, to tell the truth, to raise interest without aggressive vocabulary.”


She previously became popular in Slovakia after her decade-long struggle against the situation of a toxic landfill in her hometown of Pezinok and its surrounding areas. For this, she was awarded the 2016 Goldman Environmental Prize made her be known as "Slovakia's Erin Brockovich".


She will take office on 15 June 2019.
