THE LITTLE GIRL WHO'S MAKING HISTORY

"Little girls with dreams become women with vision" is a saying that has often in the past inspired young girls around the world to promote and initiate movements and activities for concrete changes. Such movements and activities are evident even nowadays. The coolest case is teenage Greta Thunberg, who is making history with its mobilizing ability and her spooky voice, but at the same time encouraging and impressive.

Who is Greta Thunberg and what is her mission?

Greta Thunberg is a 16-year-old teenager from Sweden devoted to fighting climate change.

Last summer, she launched her idea of a school strike for encouraging and demanding domestic and global leaders to take immediate political actions in preventing global warming and its consequences. Although her idea was not supported by her peers, she was determined for what she was doing, even without her parents' permission, regardless of her age.

But, all this not unconsciously and without reason. She had already gained knowledge about climate change and its consequences, most of her self-initiative by reading and learning constantly. Moreover, she is one of the winners of a literary competition where she has published her article on "Environment" in the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

On August 20, 2018, she started every Friday as a lone campaigner outside the Swedish parliament to protest climate change with the slogan: "School strike for climate". She passed out flyers with a list of facts about the climate crises and for informing the citizens on why she was protesting. Once she made her first posting on social media, journalists and other media were immediately offered. After three weeks of protest, on September 6th young people and other citizens began to join her.

She addressed them, but at the same time called on other countries with the words: "We will go on with the school strike every Friday as from now we will sit outside the Swedish Parliament until Sweden is aligned with the Paris agreement. We urge all of you to do the same, sit outside your Parliament or local Governments wherever you are until your country is on a safe pathway to a below two-degree warming target. Time is much shorter than we think, failure means disaster. The changes required are enormous and we must all contribute to every part of our daily life, especially us in the rich countries where no nation is doing nearly enough. The grown-ups have failed us and since most of them including the press and the politicians keep ignoring the situation we must take action into our own hands starting today. Everyone is welcomed, everyone is needed. Please join in! ''

Her call for joining the strike was answered by hundreds of thousands of school and universities students who are mobilizing and are protesting in more and more countries.

She became a famous and attractive figure for many journalists and media around the world. 16-year-old Greta Thunberg is increasingly gaining support and admiration from her peers and adults through her speeches at conferences and events of world importance. Now, she has almost more people following her than the Green Party’s leaders. In December 2018, she attended and delivered a speech at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poland. In January this year, she addressed the business elites in Davos. Thus, the movement she started last summer, sitting alone outside the Swedish Parliament, turned into a worldwide movement by challenging politicians to act. Not far than three days ago, she delivered a speech to the European Economic and Social Committee before President Jean-Claude Juncker. Shortly after her speech, President Juncker pledged that ¼ of the entire EU budget would be allocated to mitigate climate change in the next financial period, 2021 to 2027. But, Greta Thunberg does not stop here. As a rising star, she is planning a huge global mobilization on March 15th this year. This only once again proves the authenticity of the aforementioned saying.

Here is some impressive saying by Greta Thunberg detached from her speeches:

‘’ Many people say that Sweden is just a small country and it doesn't matter what we do. But I've learned that you are never too small to make a difference.’’

“ If a few children can get headlines all over the world just by not going to schcool than imagine what we could all do together if we really wanted to.”

“ I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. And act as if our house is on fire. Because it is.”

"Instead of looking for hope, look for action, then and only then, hope will come.

"We are in the middle of the biggest crisis in human history and basically nothing is being done to prevent it. I think what we are seeing is the beginning of great change and that's very hopeful.

"You say you love your children above all else and yet you're stealing their future in front of their very eyes."

"We can not solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis."

"We have not come here to beg world leaders to care for our future. You have ignored us in the past and you will ignore us again. We came here to let you know that change is coming, whether you like it or not. The real power belongs to people. ''

“We can’t save the world by playing by the rules, because the rules have to be changed.”

“Some people say that I should study to become a climate scientist so that I can solve the climate crisis. … And why should I be studying for a future that soon may be no more, when no one is doing anything to save that future? “

“Since our leaders are behaving like children we will have to take the responsibility they should have taken long ago.”
